  • Navigating the Chaos – Strategies for Delivering Complex Enterprise Projects on Time and on Budget

Whenever I speak to clients about their ‘Complex’ Projects and Programmes, I am always surprised how organisations have elected to take shortcuts to implementing their projects and not assessing and developing their delivery strategy first. When I started to deliver projects I was told very early – ‘Failing to plan is planning to fail’ and I am sorry to say most do. Delivering complex enterprise projects is never easy. Misaligned expectations, shifting priorities, and unforeseen roadblocks can wreak havoc on timelines and budgets. However, enterprises that adopt proactive strategies can turn chaos into success.

Whenever we recruit an Advisor or Project Manager, no matter how much experience they have we always ensure they have attended our Bushey Change Framework training. This is a two to three training course that takes the team through our delivery processes and tools. This ensures that we have a clear strategy and process on how the project will be delivered.

So what are some of the pitfalls we have found when being engaged to recover client’s projects –

Scope Creep – Where the scope of the project scope expands without properly adjusting the delivery strategy and resources leading to inefficiencies and budget overruns.

Poor Stakeholder Alignment – Miscommunication between departments, the project team and decision-makers results in delays and poor decisions.

Inadequate Risk Management – Failing to anticipate challenges leads to last-minute firefighting that impacts delivery.

Rigid Methodologies – Agile vs Waterfall – Neither are fully effective in todays business operations and it needs a hybrid of both. Our Bushey Change Framework ensures that we have a plan for the whole project but the individual task are allowed to operate under an agile methodology. Its clear that sticking to outdated project management approaches can slow progress rather than enable the agility to keep the project moving.

So what are the key strategies that we implement for all of our projects –

Define clear objectives and requirements – We establish a detailed project scope with well-defined milestones to prevent scope creep.

Ensure early stakeholder engagement – Foster alignment through regular check-ins and transparent communication channels.

Build Agile Project Management into the delivery – Adopting agile into our framework ensures adaptability and iterative problem-solving.

Leverage AI and Automation – We utilise technology to optimize our workflows, which helps us minimise errors, and streamline project tracking.

Build a Strong Risk Mitigation Plan – We identify potential disruptions early and create contingency strategies to handle them effectively.

Complex enterprise projects require more than just technical expertise; they demand strong leadership, collaboration, and foresight. It is important to recognise common pitfalls and implementing the strategic solutions so that organisations can navigate uncertainty while delivering successful outcomes.
