The Challenges and Triumphs of Refreshing an Enterprise Laptop Environment During M&A

Mergers and acquisitions are often described as corporate marriages, complex, emotional, and full of surprises. But what rarely gets the spotlight is the unsung hero of post-merger integration, the humble laptop. When our Bushey team was tasked with refreshing the laptop environment for a newly acquired enterprise, we knew it wouldn’t be a simple “lift and shift.” What followed was a masterclass in navigating technical, logistical, and human challenges, each one a lesson in resilience and innovation.

Challenge 1 – A Patchwork of Legacy Systems

The acquired company had a diverse fleet of devices, some running Windows 10, others still clinging to Windows 7, and a few MacBooks thrown in for good measure. There was no unified endpoint management, inconsistent security policies, and a lack of visibility into device health.

How we overcame it –

We implemented a phased rollout using Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Intune) and Autopilot. This allowed us to pre-provision devices, enforce consistent security baselines, and remotely manage updates. We also introduced a “zero-touch” deployment model, reducing the need for on-site IT support.

Challenge 2 – User Resistance and Change Fatigue

Employees were understandably wary. They’d just been through an acquisition, and now we were asking them to give up their familiar devices and workflows.

How we overcame it –

We launched a “Tech Refresh Concierge” program, personalised onboarding sessions, clear communication, and a dedicated support channel. We didn’t just hand over new laptops; we delivered an experience. Feedback scores jumped, and adoption rates exceeded 95% within the first month.

Challenge 3 – Supply Chain Disruptions

Global chip shortages and shipping delays threatened to derail our timeline. We had to get creative.

How we overcame it –

We partnered with multiple vendors, pre-ordered buffer stock, and prioritised critical user groups. In parallel, we offered virtual desktop environments for users awaiting physical devices, ensuring business continuity.

The Outcome

In under 90 days, we refreshed over 1,200 devices across the business, unified endpoint management, and improved security posture, all while maintaining user satisfaction. More importantly, we turned a potential disruption into a moment of trust-building and cultural alignment. Refreshing laptops might not sound glamorous, but in the context of M&A, it’s a strategic enabler. It’s where culture meets capability.
